Gorillaz - Plastic Beach - Virgin Records - Released: March 9, 2010
-review by Tony-
SURPRISE! They are back! The cartoon version of a rock band, 2D, Noodle, Russel and Murdoc, internationally known as Gorillaz have returned to us with their third album Plastic Beach. Gorillaz have been whipping out great albums with fantastic production since 1998 beginningwith their first self-titled album produced by Dan the Automator (Remember Dr.
ctagon & Deltron 3030? That was also Dan the Automators production). Then they returned in 2005 with Demon Days, produced by Danger Mouse. So, their shouldn`t be any SUPRISE when their 2010 album also turns out to be a form of musical genius.
Before I get started with my review, let me speak the mass cluster of retarded dumb-shits known as Blur fans. Blur was a fairly good Brit Pop band in the 90s that had a couple respectable albums. Blurs front man was Damon Albarn who iscurrently the representative and brain (along with comic artist Jamie Hewlitt) behind the group, Gorillaz. They not merely have had a longer career, more albums and larger popularity, but they go so much better than Blur. Gorillaz are smarter and more imaginative than Blur ever was. So next time Im at Coffee Bean and I see some fucking douche bag shouting out nonsense like Gorillaz will never be what Blur was. They`re only a glorified side project. expect me to sneeze on your mochacino. Such unappreciative assholes dont deserve lattes.
Think nearly the bands you liked in the 90s. I loved punk music in the 90s. NoFX, Guttermouth, SNFU, Good Riddance, Rancid, Strung Out, etc. Most of these bands are a shadow of what they used to be. Some of my favorite bands arent evenin existence today.
Metallica in the 1990s = AMAZINGMetallica in 2010 = no thanks.
Soundgarden in 1990s = a miracle for earsSoundgarden in 2010 = Chris Cornell & Timberland, enough said.
Nirvana 1990s = revolutionaryNirvana 2010 = DEAD!
Damon Albarn skipped out on Blur and in 2010 is releasing bigger and best music with some of his same vocal styles. Dont be a stupid Blur fan. Be thankful that your favorite artist from the 90s is doing it calm and doing it well. It could be so much worse for you. You could have been a Alice in Chains fan and now, in 2010,must recur to Foo Fighters.
Shit talking is ended with. Back to Plastic Beach.
I was a tad nervous when I heard that this album would be moving in the charge of electro pop, more so than their previous albums. But the effect was a synth, electro, disco pop masterpiece with doses of hip-hop, reggae and british pop rock. The idea behind Plastic Beach is allenvironmental. `Plastic Beach` is based on a landfill in Mali that Albarn visited and/or other parts of the earth taken over by diligence and whateverblah blah blah.
There is an eclectic range of featured artistson this album including Snoop Dogg (who seems to be featured on everybodys album. Next up: Tegan & Sara featuring Snoop Dog! just kidding. , De La Soul, Mick Jones & Paul Simonon of The Clash andLittle Dragon. Mos Def and Bobby Womack arefeatured ontheir first single Stylo. This is not my favourite track on the album, but I definitely dont hate it. Its synthy and poppy almost sounding like the start of the Dark Rider theme. This is an easy song to fire on the wireless and get the kiddies all excited, but it is not the best track on `Plastic Beach.`
My favourite track is Some Kind Of Nature featuring my favorite featured artist on this album Lou Reed. Some Form of Nature is a deep song about our own world and the fake (plastic) things we want to acquire status, wealth or power. Well me I like plastics and digital foils. Could wind up the sun and protect the girls, From the spiritual poisons you talk at night. Like phony clothes, but I really wish my- Of course, Reed is a dirty, son of a bitch, poetic badass on this tag as he has been his entire career. He sets himself up in this call to look ill-tempered and cranky, making this song a page right out of Lou`s song book. If this Plastic Beach had a close by Sesame Street, Lou Reed would be the Grouch, living in trash cans and talking mad shit. The call is very poetical and slightly philosophical. But HEY, Im no genius. I bearly passed my Poetic Theory class in college. If you can go down the lyrics to this song, I am all ears.
My Final Thoughs
Buy this album! Unless you area super metal head Dethklok fan or an obtuse, stuck-in-the-past Blur fan, you will enjoy Plastic Beach. Its fun, well-rounded, super produced like Demon Days, yet its serious message is a bit more like their debut album. So if you are in the LA/Burbank area and want something to geek-out over for the future couple weeks, then finish by Backside Records and scoop a transcript of Gorillaz - Plastic Beach.
And all you stupid Blur fuckos can look at Coffee Bean for Christopher Lloyd and his Delorean to learn you support to a Blur show in 1993 or you can remain inthe new world where Gorillaz exist and beg that the upcoming Blur reunion show is sooner rather than later. You guys can all jerk off to Call 2 again ifthis reunion thinghappens. Meanwhile, I hope Lou Reed takes a deck in your Coffee Bean lattes.
